Influence of magnesium aluminate spinel on synthesis of aluminum titanate material from alumina titania slag

Aluminum titanate material was prepared using alumina titania slag from ferroalloy factory as the main raw material,basing on the basic formulation of 71. 5%( in mass,the same hereinafter) alumina titania slag and 28. 5% titanium dioxide powder,extra adding 1%,2%,3% and 4% of magnesium aluminate spinel as additive,respectively,adding polyvinyl alcohol solution as binder,wet milling,drying,pressing,then firing at 1 400,1 450 and 1 500 ℃ for 2 h in order to cut raw materials cost of synthesizing aluminum titanate material. The BD and AP of the synthesized material were determined,the phase composition and microstructure were analyzed using XRD and SEM,and the aluminum titanate lattice constants of the synthesized material were determined using X'Pert Plus software. The results show that the Mg2 +in spinel replaces Ti4 +in aluminum titanate,causing the increase of aluminum titanate lattice constants and the distortion of crystal lattice,thus accelerating the synthesis and sintering of aluminum titanate; with the temperature rising,the replacing and accelerating effects strengthen.
