Compound Family as a Characteristic in the Tang Dynasty

Zhang Guogang
The compound family in the Tang Dynasty has two dominant forms: families who lived together and separate families under the same registration. Those who dwelt together might not belong to the same family, while who separated to form new families might remain under the same registration. This dual characteristic of the Tang Dynasty compound family shows the difference between“household”and“family,”as well as the separation of the form and the functions of a family. As one side of the prism reflecting the social changes in the Tang and Song dynasties, this phenomenon was closely related with the changing clan system and legal system in the medieval transition period.
