Feeding Value of Oat and wheat Silage

Two varieties of oat and wheat were dried and ensiled separately at different maturity. The yields of fresh forage, hay and silage which had been harvested at different growing stages were determined, and the differences in their nutrient components were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) the optimum time for oat reaping should be 30 days after flowering, while that for wheat reaping should be 20 days after flowering; (2) the crude protein content of these crops decreased progressively with the extension of their growing periods, while crude fiber content increased progressively with the extension of their growing periods; (3) silage could keep more nutrients than hay.
