Experiments on the drag-reduction of non-wetting materials

As an initial study on the drag-reduction of water-repellent materials, the drag and boundary layer velocity profile of four plates are measured in a water tunnel. The plates have the same shape but different water-repellent qualification and surface qualification.They are specified as wetting and smooth, non-wetting and smooth, wetting and rough, non-wetting and rough plates, respectively. Drag reduction appears in laminar flow when the non-wetting plate is compared with the substrate wetting and smooth plate. But the other two plates show no obviously difference among the substrate plate. So the drag reduction of non-wetting materials is confirmed to be the co-laboring effect of the water-repellent qualification and surface structure of the surface material. The measured velocity profile suggests that the non-wetting and rough surface had brought forward the transition of laminar boundary and it is dictated that the drag-reduction of non-wetting rough plate mainly results from the laminar flow drag-reduction.
