A MEASURE FOR ELIMINATING DRIFT INSTABILITY OF THE MULTI-TRANSMITTING FORMULA

The multi-transmitting formula (MTF)~[1] is a local artificial boundary condition used for numerical simulation of the near-field wave motion in infinite media. One type of the numerical instabilities, the drift instability, in implementation of MTF into the numerical simulation by the time-step integration is studied and results in a simple measure for eliminating this type of instability based on a physical interpretation of GKS stability criterion on numerical solutions of initia L-boundary value problems of the hyperbolic partial differential equation. Validity of the suggested measure is then tested by numerical experiments of three dimensional wave motions emitted from a point source or scattered from a cavity.
