DEFORMATION AND FRACTURE OF Zr_(51)Ti_5Ni_(10)Cu_(25)Al_9 BULK METALLIC GLASS UNDER RAPID HEATING AND PRE-LOAD

Bulk metallic glasses are regarded as potential engineering materials because of their unique mechnical and physical properties.Mechanical behavior of bulk metallic glass and its composite over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures attracted many researchers' interests.In this paper,a systematic experimental study were performed on Gleeble3500 thermal-mechanical testing system to study the effects of heating rates on mechanical behavior of Zr_(51)Ti_5Ni_(10)Cu_(25)Al_9 bulk metallic glass under pre-load.The results show that failure models of this material changes from heating soften to catastrophic rupture with increasing pre-load and heating rate.Under low pre-load,yield behavior of Zr_(51)Ti_5Ni_(10)Cu_(25)Al_9 bulk metallic glass is controlled by both pre-stress and heating rate;under high pre-load and heating rate the material failures in shear fracture mode and the temperature of destructive sample is close to or above the glass transition temperature when catastrophic rupture occurs,meanwhile the pre-stress is much lower than the strength at room temperature and characters of the rupture surface are unusual with quasi-static compression experimental results.Structure relaxation of amorphous alloy under changing temperature is discussed and the relations of yield temperature and heating rate as well as pre-stress are deduced.The reason of catastrophic rupture under this experimental condition is also analyzed based on metallographic observation of recovery samples and a critical failure model is also given out.
