PERCUTANEOUS ELECTRIC STIMULATION PROMOTING THE EXPRESSION OF GAP-43mRNA IN SPINAL CORD OF SCIATIC NERVE INJURED RATS

Objective: The expression of GAP-43mRNA in the spinal motoneurons during injury and regeneration of the sciatic nerves and the effects of percutaneous electric stimulation on it were studied. Method: Injured sciatic nerves were made in 60 male adule wistar rats. Injured nerves were treated by percutaneous electric stimulation. The changes of GAP-43mRNA in spinal cord were examined by in situ hybridization. Results: GAP-43mRNA positive cells increased on 1d.Peaked at 7d, begain to decrease 14d later and no positive cells after 28d in electrical group. The expression of GAP-43mRNA was increasing from1-7d, beginning to decrease 14d later and some positive cells were still examined 28d later in control groups. Conclusion: The time of the expression of GAP-43mRNA in spinal cord can be changed by percutaneous electrical stimulation; percutaneous electrical stimulation can promote synaptic regeneration and rebuilding.
