Research progress on paddy-field farming system in the south of China

On the basis of discussing the significance of paddy-field farming system (PFFS) to southern China's sustainable agriculture and the existing problems, the main achievements of the research on PFFS and its production in late 50 years are reviewed. The latest research advance is analyzed. The orientation and targets of future research and adjustment of PFFS is discussed.

4 The evlution of the planting system in Jiangsu province falls into two historical periods. We have appraised objectively the exprience of the development of the planting system. In this paper, it is pointed out there exist contradictions between grains and cottons in area, conflicts between usage and maintenance of the fields, lacks of the put-into in the farming. Furthermoce, a new planting system is advanced that can improve the farming condition, develop the intensive farming, combine the high yield of crops with diversified economy, put the fodders and forage grasses and the soil fertility raising crops into the plantation structure, establish a multiponent and multiharvest system that combines grains, forages and economic crops into a whole.;Shao Dasan Huang Xixi et al.
