Precision and Differential Analysis by Using GPS and Recall Diaries in the Tourist's Behavior Research:The Case of Gulangyu

The Global Positioning System(GPS) and recall diaries are two major methods that many researchers like to use for analysis in the field of tourism behaviors. However, at present, there is a lack of empirical research on their precision and the subjective and objective differences between the resultssupported by GPS and recall diaries. Using Gulangyu Island, Xiamen as an example, the differences in precision and correctness between the two investigation methods can be compared based on GPS and recall diaries data gathered in 2014—2015. We compared the superposition rate of tourism paths between GPS data and recall diaries, as well as the matching rate of the action-chain(action sequences during visiting) and the matching rate of the time(visiting time at each spots) at the level of case studies. These data were comprehensively analyzed to discern the differences between different groups of tourists with regard to travel distance and subjective and objective spatial distribution features. The characteristics and reasons for the different patterns of spatial distribution were also investigated.Gulangyu is a historical cultural attraction that is also known all over China as an easily accessible‘lost'place(easy to get lost). We found that: 1) the superposition rate of paths between GPS and recall diaries was only 30%-50%, 2) the matching rate of the action-chain was only 40%-50% using the method of Levenshtein, and 3) the similarity accuracy of residence time was 20%-50%. Differential spatial distribution was divided into three categories: deep impression regions, dim impression regions,and forgotten regions. Aside from individual factors, the main reasons for the difference between GPS and recall diaries in the result of behavior include forgetfulness on the part of different people, the number of large and complex of roads, similarities in the features of buildings, the large number of cultural attractions and places with attractive natural scenery, and too many stores that sell the same goods. These are all special and important characteristics of Gulangyu Island. The generalizable results of this paper are: 1) for research on walking behavior at a micro scale in scenic spots, it is feasible to apply an automatic data processing method to process the GPS action-chain using a 50 m × 50 m meshing algorithm and regions with 5-min stays; 2) the differences between GPS and recall diaries help the government and the tourism exploitation company to better understand the spatial characteristics of tourism and upgrade scenic areas accordingly; 3) the combination of traditional questionnaire surveys and modern GPS research methods is an important method for elucidating tourism patterns. These findings can be applied to further investigate individual refined behavior modeling as well as being in other fields.
