Identity in the Context of Modern Tourism: Scientometric Analysis of SSCI Journal Publications

LI Zhiwei;ZHAO Zhifeng;Business School, Sichuan University;Tourism and Service College, Chongqing University of Education;
In the context of modern tourism, identity studies have been a hotspot issue in the international social science field with significant achievements made by international academic circles.Seven hundred ninety English papers were selected from Social Sciences Citation Index(SSCI)journals using "tourism and identity" as the topical subject. These papers were analyzed using knowledge mapping and social network analyses, which are important scientometrics tools. The following results were obtained:(1) the number of identity research studies experienced a strong increase in recent years following a booming trend in the literature and(2) the high-yield authors were mainly distributed in Western developed countries. In addition, the frequency of keywords in the articles published in SSCI journals during 1984 found to be extensive and included som-e 2015 were analyzed statistically. The research topics were high-frequency keywords for the identity thesis.Keywords such as authenticity, heritage, and ethnic were the most actively used. The produced keyword map presented six obviously differentiated word groups, which indicates that this research category is becoming increasingly larger with diversified research perspectives. Meanwhile, on the basis of these highly cited articles in the field, we can conclude that the basic identity theory was formed during the 1970 s-1990 s. The authors cited with high frequency, such as Urry, MacCannell, and Cohen et al., were the pioneers and founders of this research field. Based on this analysis, we explored the theoretical basis of identity which includes the theories of authenticity, gaze, modernity,globalization, nationalism, and Giddens' theory of self-identity. The subject of identity in this research field has become the sixth most published topic worldwide, and a great number of papers by Chinese authors have focused on identity, but these researchers explored this topic's inheritance from the theoretical foundation of Western academia and research thought.In addition, few papers are cited with high frequency in the literature; therefore, there is still a big gap in the domestic literature when compared with studies in European and American countries. Thus, Chinese scholars who represent the domestic academic circles experience new challenges and need to develop research depth. Internally,scholars in China need to improve their research quality and efficiency, and elevate their academic influence and visibility in all dimensions, while externally, they need to increase their international communication capacity and obtain an"international voice."Based on analysis of the high-frequency cited literature, this study analyzes the main theories of identity, discusses research thought, research frameworks, and dynamic mechanisms. This study not only objectively reflects the research progress and academic trends in identity theory, but can also provide academic clues for further research.Similarly, the findings can also be helpful for domestic-related identity research and applications.
