Preliminary study on cathartic effects of free anthraquinone in rhubarb

Objective To study the cathartic effects of free anthraquinone extracted from rhubarb on mice with experimental constipation.Methods 50 Mice were divided into 5 groups:control group,model group,positive control group,lower free anthraquinone group (920 mg/kg) and higher free anthraquinone group (2760 mg/kg).The constipation model induced by dehydration was established in mice.Free anthraquinone was given through the colon and its cathartic effects on mice with constipation were investigated.Results Free anthraquinone extracted from rhubarb significantly shortened the first bowel-movement time and increased the number of stool nodules and stool weight when compared with model group (P0.01).Conclusion Free anthraquinone extracted from rhubarb has cathartic effects on mice with constipation.
