Study on Ceramic Cutter's Wear Mechanism When Dry Cutting Austempered Ductile Iron(ADI)

Precise dry cutting experiment was done on Austempered Ductile Iron(ADI) with CC650 and YG6.Wear shape of cutter's surface was observed by means of scanning electron microscope(SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry(EDS).Qualitative analysis of cutter's wear and composition of workpiece's surface was done with EDS.Phase analysis on cutter,workpiece and chips was carried out by means of X-ray-diffraction(XRD).Wear mechanism and performance of the cutter are discussed.Wear mechanism are mainly abrasive wear,cohesive wear,spreading-wear,micro-chipping and fracture.There is a little Al and Ti in ADI.If this kind of material was cut under high speed,affinity between workpiece and cutter will increase,which will lead to cohesive wear.When average temperature of cutter's rake face up to 800 ℃,element Fe and Si in ADI will diffuse into the cutter,and element Al and Ti in cutter will diffuse into ADI.Such kind of pervasion promoted cutter's wear.There are Al_2O_3 phase in ADI after cutting and FeCr phase in the chips.Such high rigidity compounds are one of the main factors leading to abrasive wear of CC650.
