Effect of Micro-palygorskite Powder in Base Oil on the Tribological Properties of Steel/Steel Rubbing Pair and Approach to Its Mechanism

Tribotest for identifying the effect of micron-palygorskite powder as an additive in base oil on the tribological properties of steel-pair was made on a pin-on-disc tester.The variation of composition and structure of surface layer of samples after tribotest were analysed by SEM,TEM,AES and Raman spectrometer,The action mechanism of palygorskite powder in the friction and wear process was approached as well.In comparison with steel-pair with base oil,the steel-pair using palygorskite additive obviously decreased friction coefficient and wear,the surface of steel sample became smoother,the thickness of oxidative layer on the surface was reduced,the C element was obviously enriched in the surface layer of disk sample,and the palygorskite particles were broken up and untied as fibres in the wear process.all above factors played beneficial roles for improving the tribological properties.
