Wear Performance and Mechanism of Si_3N_4 Composite Ceramic Cutting Tool

The wear resistance and life of Si_3N_4 composite ceramic cutting tool were studied when cutting 45# carbon steel and 1Cr18Ni9Ti austenite stainless steel.Meanwhile the cutting temperature distributions on the surface of the tool at different cutting speed were measured by a thermal video system, and the wear morphologies and wear mechanisms were investigated by SEM,EDX as well. The research results showed that the ceramic tool life when cutting 45# steel was 9.5 times as much as that when cutting stainless steel. And the later cutting temperature was 200～300 ℃ higher than the former. The main wear mechanism for cutting stainless steel was adhesion and diffusion promoted by high cutting temperature, which was the main reason of difficulttocut for stainless steel.
