The Proteins and Isoenzymes Related to Vernalization of Wheat

Three different wheat varieties in development properties were treated by means of vernalization, devernalization and analyzed by SDS PAGE. The results showed that not only the amount of soluble proteins increased, but also some new proteins appeared in the vernalization process of winter wheat. Two kinds of new proteins (53.2 kD, 46 kD) appeared at the same time in England Mercia and China Jing 841 and existed stably during the vernalization and devernalization process. These were also existed in spring wheat, but not in winter wheat before vernalization. This showed that newly synthesized proteins were highly related to vernalization. The molecular weight of the new bands of peroxidase and esterase isoenzymes in the vernalization process approached to that of the soluble protein. This result showed that peroxidase and esterase were highly related to vernalization of winter wheat. Glucose 6 phosphate isoenzyme was related to vernalization development in some degree. Yet, superoxide dismutase (SOD) isoenzyme was not related to vernalization development.
