The concept of intermittent faults is introduced and the background, cause, as well as research significance of the fault diagnosis problem for intermittent faults are analyzed. Classifications for intermittent faults are provided according to their characteristics such as cause, amplitude and correlations with different time instants. The research status of fault diagnosis for intermittent faults is reviewed in two categories, i.e., qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis methods. The basic ideas, advantages, disadvantages, as well as application conditions of each category are highlighted and discussed. Finally, some open problems of the research on fault diagnosis for intermittent faults are pointed out.
