PILLAR STABILITY ANALYSIS IN STRIP MINING

Hu Bingnan(Beijing Research Institute of Coal Mining ,Central Coal Mining Research Inuitute)  
A systematic analysis of pillar stability in strip mining was made.It suggest that A. H.Wilson's formusa of pillar strength is to be adopted for the general geological and mining conditions based on case studies. The safety factor of shear strength at weak plane in any direction was deduced.The simplified formula for calculation of v.vriation of width of the yielded zone due to the friction effect between the roof or floor and coal pillar was also proposed. The mechanism of increasing the strength of coal pillar by confined pressure was investigated under triaxial stress conditions. The authors concentrated on the non-linear relationship between pillal load and the extraction ratio. Several problems in strip mining design were pointed out.
