The Responsibility of Art:An Inquiry on the Ethical Dimension of Dewey's Aesthetics

WANG Ruo-cun;School of Humanities,Hangzhou Normal University;
The ethical dimension of John Dewey's thoughts is mainly reflected in three aspects: the mutual relevance between art and life,the self's growth together with the growth of the world,and the future-oriented criticism and creativity.The consummatory experience of art is an intensification of ordinary experience. The mode,by which art expressively synthesizes and organizes empirical materials,provides guidance for the way to endow everyday life with meanings. In the realm of art and moral,self and the world grow together by means of the interaction with one another. Self-realization and harmonization of the community is actualized within this organic process. The morality of art is also embodied in the fact that the criticism and creativity within artistic creation and appreciation are capable to break fixed habits,in order to realize the civilization of both individuals and societies by means of art communication. In addition,art offers imaginations about more possibilities of existence. The responsibility of art in the contemporary era is to provide an intelligence that indicates a better life mode for human beings,which is also the significance of the ethical dimension of Dewey's aesthetics for today.
