Heavy Metal Pollution in Cropland Soil in Cixi City of Zhejiang Province

With the quickly developing of economy and urbanization, the environment problem in our country is serious and the heavy metal pollution in soils should be paid more attention to. In this study, a GIS-based geostatistical method was used to analyze the spatial variation of heavy metals in cropland soil in Cixi city of Zhejiang province. The single index assessment was used to assess the heavy metal pollution in soil, the spatial variation analysis was done with geostatistical software ilwis3.2 and the distribution map was draw through Kriging insert. The descriptive statistics results showed that the average content of heavy metal in soil was not high, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb being 33.95 mg·kg-1, 88.91 mg·kg-1, 0.15 mg·kg-1 and 28.06 mg·kg-1 respectively, but the biggest value in several soil samples reached a very high level. The single index assessment showed the pollution of heavy metals in cropland soil was not serious, only 11% of Cu, 3.1% of Zn, 0.9% of Cd, and 3.5% of Pb reached the medium grade pollution level and 4% of Cu, 0.9% of Zn, 0.9% of Pb reached the high pollution level. The spatial analysis indicated that these four elements were all moderate correlation in soils, the correlation of Cd was relatively stronger than the others and the distribution of Pb was relatively more homogeneous than the others. The ratio of nugget to sill for Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb was 42.6%, 64.2%, 47.6%, 26.3%, with the range 9.2 km, 7.8 km, 8.2 km and 18.3 km respectively. The Kriging insert reflected that the spatial distribution of heavy metals in soils followed the same rule: the content of heavy metal in soils reduced gradually from south to north. The high content of heavy metals in Cixi cropland soils was related to the acutely activity of local people.
