A SHORT-CUT DETERMINATION OF ACTIVITY COEFFICIENTS FOR ELECTROLYTE IN MIXED SOLVENT BY ADDING CONTINUOUSLY A CONCENTRATED ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION

A short-cut method and the experimental apparatus used to determine activity coefficients for electrolyte in mixed solvent have been established with the help of ion-selective electrodes by adding concentrated electrolyte solution continuously rather than by weighting samples one by one.Activity coefficient values for HCI in methanol-water mixtures containing X=0, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 90 weight precent of methanol at 298. 15 K are calculated from the electromotive force (emf) with Pitzer equation for the following cell:pH-glass electrode |HCl(m), H_2O(1-X), MeOH (X)|AgCl—AgThe experimental results agree well with those available in literature.
