Impacts of Seasonal and Interannual Variability of Sea Surface Temperature on the Climate Variability over East Asia

The impacts of seasonal and interannual variability of sea surface temperature on regional climate variability over east Asia have been studied by using a P-σ regional climate model in this paper. Numerical experiments show that the interannual variability of 500 hPa geopotential height in the numerical experiment with actual sea surface temperature forcing is larger than that with or without seasonal variations of sea surface temperature forcing. Therefore, interannual variability of sea surface temperature forcing is most important in the simulation of interannual variability of 500 hPa geopotential height fields. The seasonal variation of sea surface temperature forcing leads to enhancement of the simulated 500 hPa geopotential height field in winter but weakening in summer, with larger variability at higher latitudes. The temperature over east Asia at 500 hPa forced by actual sea surface temperature increases in winter but decreases in lower_latitude areas in summer, especially over coastal area of Southern China, northern South China Sea and Bay of Bengal. Moreover, the impact on the precipitation variability in Southern China is more obvious than in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze river valley.
