Effects of Nanometer Metal Powders on Thermal Decomposition Characteristics of RDX

The effects of nanometer metal powders (Cu, Ni), super fine metal powders (Al,Ni) and normal metal powders (Cu, Al) on the thermal decomposition characteristics of RDX have been investigated by DSC. Results show that the apparent activation energy of the thermal decomposition of RDX decreases 2.3 kJ/mol due to the effect of nanometer Cu, thus reducing results in that the peak temperature of the thermal decomposition of RDX by 24.9 ℃ downward. The influence of nanometer Cu on the thermal decomposition of RDX is much greater than that of normal Cu. Nevertheless, for other metal powders, their influences on the thermal decomposition behavior of RDX are very little, whether their particle sizes are big or small. At 0.1, 2.0, 6.0MPa pressure, the change of peak shape of RDX in the mixture of RDX/nanometer Cu is totally different from that of RDX. In the mixture of RDX/nanometer Cu, the influence of nanometet Cu on the peak temperature of the thermal decomposition characteristics becomes weak with the content of nanometer Cu decreasing and causes the peak temperature of the thermal decomposition of RDX to shift upward. However, when the ration of RDX to nanometer Cu changed from 15∶1 to 20∶1, the peak temperature of the thermal decompsition of RDX shifts downward. The mechanism of nanometer Cu on the thermal decomposition characteristics of RDX has been explored.
