A STUDY OF Zn DEFICIENCY IN RICE ON THE PADDY SOILS DEVELOPED IN THE YANGTZE RIVER SEDIMENT OF YANGZHONG COUNTY,JIANGSU PROVINCE

Soil analyses and pot and field experiments have shown that stunted ricein Yangzhong County,Jiangsu Province is a physiological disease due to Zndeficiency.Application of Zn is effecctive in curing this disease,When ZnO isapplied at the rate of 2—4 jin/mu,an increase of 8.5—12.4 of rice yields canbe achieved.Zn deficiency in rice is related to the nature of the soil which is high inCaCO_3 content,having a pH about 8 and low available zinc content approxi-mate to or lower than 0.5 ppm.Application of phosphate fertilizer with organicmatter further decrease the availability of Zn in the soil.In that case,the P/Znratio is over 20—30 in plants suffering from this disease.The after-effect of Zn—fertilizer is evident.When ZnO is applied at therate of 4 jin/mu,after the rice is cut,available zinc in the soil rises from0.45 ppm to 2.24—2.46ppm,the second value being about five times that be-fore ZnO is applied.
