Fipronil resistance in small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus (Fallén) and mechanisms

In this work,fipronil resistance was selected with the experimental population in laboratory.The realized heritability (h2) of resistance and the activity of detoxification enzymes were both analyzed to declare the potentiality and mechanisms for fipronil resistance in this pest.The results showed that fipronil resistance developed slowly in small brown planthopper.The selection for 24 generations resulted only in 21.2 times of resistance.The realized heritability of the resistance was only 0.041.Comparison analysis revealed that the resistant and susceptible strain had similar activity of esterase and glutathione-S-transferase.However,the activity of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase in resistant strain was 1.58 folds higher.PBO,TPP and DEM showed no synergism on fipronil in susceptible hoppers.But in resistant hoppers PBO exhibited very high synergism (13.68 folds),and TPP (1.39 folds) and DEM (1.35 folds) very little.These results revealed that the enhanced cytochrome P450 monooxygenase activity was the main mechanism for fipronil resistance in this pest.
