RECURRENT SELECTION FOR GRAIN FILLING CHARACTERS IN WHEAT

Grain yield of wheat is related closely to grain filling characters. The objectives of this research were to investigate the effect of recurrent selection, by using Ta1 gene, on increased grain filling duration (GFD) and rate (GFR), and indirect effects on grain yield components and some agronomic characters. After 3 cycles of selection, both duration and rate of grain filling were increased significantly. The gain of selection for GFD and GFR was 4.77% and 8.21%, respectively, per cycle. The grain yield characters were indirectly improved to a certain extent. Grain yield per plant in two sub populations was increased by 4.11% and 3.29% per cycle. There was a marked genetic variation in all recurrent selection populations.
