Accumulation and distribution of cadmium and phosphorus and their interaction in wheat suspensioncultured cells

Two experiments on wheat suspensioncultured cells at different cadmium and phosphorus were conducted. In the first one, the cells were cultured at four levels of cadmium (0, 50, 100, 180 μmol/L) and one level of phosphorus (2.5 mmol/L) to investigate the effect of cadmium on the accumulation and distribution of phosphorus in the cells; In the other one, three levels of cadmium (0, 50, 180 μmol/L) and two levels of phosphorus (0.5, 2.5 mmol/L) were designed to study the Cd×P interaction in the cells. All the experiments were conducted for 7 d. Cadmium added inhibited the growth of cells. However, increasing phosphorus level in the medium counteracted in part the growth inhibition by cadmium. With the increasing cadmium level, the concentration of cadmium in the cells increased, while that of phosphorus decreased. Phosphorus addition reduced the cadmium accumulation in the cells. Most cadmium in the cells was found to be bound to cell walls, and as much as 85% of phosphorus was also retained in the cell walls, which means that cadmium may be deposited as insoluble cadmium phosphate. These results demonstrated a cellular basis for the detoxification of cadmium by phosphorus in the suspensioncultured wheat cells.
