On the evolution of the Theme of “Divining for Residence” in Classical Poetry and Its Significance

Jin Yeyan;
The theme of "divining residence"( or "bu ju") in poetry began as early as in the Book of songs. In the early stages,it's only a presentation of resident cultural. Since Qu Yuan,it has become a way of expressing the scholars' feeling and aspiration,thus the poems of this theme were created. This kind of poems existed here and there in the six dynasties,thrived in the Tang and Song Dynasties,deviated in the Ming Dynasty,and declined in the Qing Dynasty. During this long period,its evolution was following two different tracks: one is to detach from politics,reducing the feelings of patriotism and showing the interests of eremitism; the other turns to the secular society and changes from elite elegancy towards the interests of secular life.This evolution has its particular social political,economic and cultural background,reflecting the process from prosperity towards decline of the federalist autocracy and the Confucian culture,as well as the booming of the commercial economy in the later period of the federalist society. Exploring the evolution of the poems with the theme of "divining residence"will be helpful in recognizing the complex relationship between ancient politics,economy,culture,and the mentality and literature creation of ancient scholars.
