A Socio-cultural Psychological Analysis of Responsibility

LI Ming,GENG Jin-ang
The sense of responsibility is a socio-psychological phenomenon embedded in specific cultures and interpersonal relationships.A good case in point is the concept of chaxu geju(differential mode of association) proposed by Fei Xiaotong, which captures the structure of interpersonal relationship by taking into account the characteristics of Chinese culture. The interpersonal relationship in China can boil down to the three elements of yi(duties),li(interests),and qing(human sentiments). With the aspects of responsibility in each element analyzed,we proposed that whatever category the interpersonal relationship belongs to,it is structured in a differential mode with the distribution of responsibility rippling away from the center of self.We also analyzed other aspects of the differential mode of responsibility, including the basis of its identification, its scope of function, its two-dimensional structure as well as its dynamic mechanism(i.e.methods based on the Doctrine of the Mean).Furthermore,we made some suggestions about how to conduct meta-analyses and empirical studies of the sense of responsibility in the socio-cultural context.
