Effects of Salvia Miltiorrhiza on Levels of LDL Receptor mRNA and apoA-I mRNA

Jiang Chuancang,et al.(Atheroselerosis Research Center)
Effects of Chinese medicine,Salvia Miltiorrhiza on serum lipid levels, hepatic low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor and apolipoprotein(apo) A-I mRNA levels were studied in cholesterol-loaded rats and cultured human fibroblasts. It was observed that Salvia Miltiorrhiza enhanced LDL recceptor mRNA levels in rat liver and in cultured human fibroblasts, but acted less effectively in lowering serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol,suggesting translational or post-translational regulation of LDL receptor. No effects on apoA-1 mRNA levels of rat liver and human fibroblasts were noticed.
