An Epidemiological Study on the Relationship between Genetic and Environmental Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

A case control study on 183 cases and 164 controls was made in an epidemiological survey in 1997 in Jiangsu province, to explore genetic and envirenmental risk factors and their relationship in type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results showed that the average of age and sex ratio in both case and control groups were comparable. The total cumulative incidence rate of the first degree relatives in cases was 3.76%, being significantly higher than that in controls 1.10%( P 0.005). The heritability of type 2 diabetes mellitus was 36.2%. Logistic regression analysis showed that the relative risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus was significantly increased when both genetic and environmental risk factors such as obesity and hypertension were observed. It means that the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus results from both genetic and environmental risk factors.
