Ming Antu, the First Inventor of Catalan Numbers in the World
Luo Jianjia (Institute for the History of Science Nei Monggol Normal University)
Catalan numbers is a famous counting function in combinatorics today, and many scholars have made a study on this series in history. Western mathematicians do not know that the first inventor of Catalan numbers in the world is neither L. Euler (1758), nor E.Catalan (1838), but ChineseMongolian mathematician Ming Antu(1692—1763? in the Qing Dynasty), who put forward these numbers in order to solve a problem of infinite series the 30's or 40's of 18th century. Ming Antu's result in modern form is expressed in this paper, which also points out that there is a marked difference between two methods and modern methods.
