The Embryology of Tetraena monyolica Maxim

The present paper deals with the embryolgy of Tetraena mongolica Maxim., an endemic species in Nei Mongol. The results are as follows: Anther is 4-lobed. The anther wall consists of 5 to 6 layers of cell and its development is of basic type. The tapetum cell with one, or ratly two nuclei is of secretary type. Simiultaneus cytokinesis in the microspore mother cells follows meiosis. The microspore is tetrahedral. An embryo sac-like pollen is observed at the stage of uninucleus. The pollen grains are 2-celled at shedding. The histochemical changes in the anther wall ate closely related to the development of microspore mother cells and the pollen. The ovary is four locular, with axile placentation. The ovule with a long funicle, orthotropous, crassinucellate, bitegminous with a micropyle surrounded by inner integument. The archesporium is multicellular and only one of which undergoes further development. The embryo sac formation is of monosporic type, and the mature embryo sac consists of four cells, i.e. an egg cell, two synergids and one central cell with a polar nucleus. The histochemical changes in nucellus and integument are closely related to the development of megaspore mother cell and embryo sac. The embryogeny of Tetraena mongoliais is Solanad typed. During the development of embryo, the suspensor consists of a row of 8~10 cells. The cotyledons and embryo proper cells of mature embryo axe rich in protein, and their cell wall is thickened reticulately. The endosperm development is nuclear type. Endosperm haustorium as caeca forms at chalazal end. At late stage of endosperm development, starch granules are accumlated in peripheral endosperm cells, and the disintegration of central endosperm cells occur simultaneously. At last the starch granules disappear and the cell wall of the peripheral endosperm cells become thickened. Both inner and outer integuments degenerate during the development of seeds and only the restiges of inner integument is present. The function of seed coat is substituted and strengthened by the specialized peripheral endosperm. Ovule abortion occurs after anthesis, especially during the 10~30 days after anthesis.
