Hyperconcentrated Flow in the Southern China Granite Region and the Implictaions in Geomorphology

A first effort is made in this study to deal systematically with the hyperconcentrated flow occurring in the Southern China granite region, including the conditions and process of its formation, the characteristics of the silt content hydrograph and sediment transportation, as well as the role it plays in the development of a special small-scale erosion land-form called "benggang" in this region.Different from the hyperconcentrated flow in the loess plateau, the hyperconcentrated flow in the Southern China is not formed on hillslopes by rainsplash, sheet and rill erosion, but formed by the intensive erosion process within benggangs. After flowing out of the benggang, the hyperconcentrated flow turns to a non-hyperconcentrated one. The silt content hydrogiaph of the hyperconcentrated flow in this region is generally multi-peaked, with a sharply increasing but slowly declining sediment concentration. Some thresholds are given in this paper for the occurrence of hyperconcentrated flow, including the th rainfall intensity and forest cover.The hyperconcentrated flow in the Southern China granite region has a very strong erosive action and sediment carrying capacity. In a joint operation with mass-wasting, the hyperconcentrated flow in benggangs results in an extremely high erosive rate. For example, an erosive rate of 391000 t/km2/a has been observed in the No. 9 Benggang in the Sheng-yong catchment of Deqing County, Guangdong Province. Based on the concept of hyperconcentrated flow, we can get a better understanding on the soil erosion and geomorphological processes in tropical and southern subtropical humid granite regions where the forests have been destructed by man.
