Variation of bank-full area at Gaocun station in the Lower Yellow River

This paper presents a study on the effects of flow runoff and incoming sediment coefficient on the bank-full area at Gaocun station in the lower Yellow River.The bank-full areas were determined based on the cross-sectional data measured at the end of every flood season from 1960 to 2002.The analysis revealed that the bank-full area increases with the increase in flow runoff of the flood season,and the correlation coefficient between the bank-full area and the 4 years' moving average flow runoff of flood season has the highest value.The bank-full area decreases with the increase in incoming sediment coefficient of the flood season,and the correlation coefficient between the bank-full area and the 5 years' moving average incoming sediment coefficient of flood season has the highest value.An equation for the calculation of bank-full area is proposed,which can reflect the effects of both flow runoff and incoming sediment coefficient.The proposed equation can be used for the prediction of bank-full area at Gaocun station in response to the changes of flow and sediment conditions.
