Estimating the bankfull discharge in the Lower Yellow River and analysis of its variation processes

Characteristics of channel geometry and discharging capacity in the main channel change significantly along the Lower Yellow River because of complicated cross-sectional profiles.Thus,it is more representative to describe them using the reach-averaged characteristic variants.In this paper,a composite method is proposed to estimate the reach-averaged characteristic parameters,which integrates the geometric mean based on the log-transformation with the weighted average based on the distance between two consecutive sections.The product of the estimated reach-scale bankfull width,depth and velocity always equals to the corresponding bankfull discharge.Using the proposed method,the reach-scale bankfull discharges are estimated in the reach between Huayuankou and Gaocun in typical years of the period from 1960 to 2006. Estimated results show that:(i)the obtained reach-scale bankfull discharges can comprehensively reflect the change in the discharging capacity in the main channel of the braided reach,and its variation range is less than that of section-scale bankfull discharge;(ii)the variation in the reach-scale bankfull discharge can respond well to the accumulative sedimentation in the braided reach;and(iii)the correlation curve is established between reach-scale bankfull discharge and 2-year averaged flow discharge and incoming sediment coefficient during flood seasons.In addition,the variation process of recent reach-scale bankfull discharges are estimated in different reaches,and calculated results indicate that the value of reach-scale bankfull discharge in the transitional reach is less than that in the braided or meandering reach,which can describe the"hump" phenomenon in the longitudinal change of reach-scale bankfull discharges.
