The Semantic and Grammatical Functions of "PK" and Relevant Concepts

XU Yu-hong (School of Liberal Arts, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing 210097, China)
"PK" became a very popular word in 2005 due to the help of "Super Female Voice" in Hunan's TV program shows. In fact, "PK" is the abbreviation of "Player Kill" or "Player Killing" from network games or "Point Kick" or "Penalty Kick" in soccer games. In practical application, "PK" is used far beyond its original meaning of its literal sense. A lot of extended meanings derive from it, so do its grammatical usage and part of speeches. With "PK" being used more and more in some formal occasions, its usage should be normalized in order to suit the needs of social development and the laws of language development.
