Influence of brackish water on the soil salt regime and yield of winter wheat and summer maize

Drought and fresh water shortage are the main limited factors of sustainable agriculture development in the North China Plain (also referred to as the Huang Huai Hai Plain or 3-H Plain). The scarcity of fresh water forces farmers to use shallow saline ground water. The risk of soil salinity would increase. This paper describes the changes of soil salts and crop responses to brackish water irrigation based on field experiments from October 1997 to July 2001. It was found that brackish water irrigation resulted a rapid accumulation of salts, notably in the upper 80 cm soil layer. The maximal electrical conductivity (EC) of 20~40 cm soil layer exceeded 20 mS·cm -1. The salts were leached from 150 cm during the wet season. With the total precipitation of 550 mm and additional 250 mm irrigation water with high quality, all the salts in 80 cm soil layer of a sandy loam soil were leached. Irrigating with brackish water, the average yields of winter wheat and summer maize were 91% and 92% of the recorded maxima respectively, but only 67% and 89% if non-irrigation. Irrigation with the brackish water for three years, the yield of winter wheat was about 92% of the maximum. The experiments confirmed that brackish water irrigation was economically attractive to farmers for a short term. Ecological hazard may occur in long-term use of the water. The average electrical conductivity lower than 8 mS·cm -1 in the 20~60 cm soil had no significant effect on the yield of summer maize. The yield would significantly decline if the EC was 10~15 mS·cm -1 at dry year. However winter wheat yield would decrease by 10%.
