Effects of Methionine and Methionylmethionine on Expression of Casein α_(s1) Gene in Cultured Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cells

To investigate effects of the different levels of methionine and its replacement by methionylmethionine on expression of casein αs1 gene in cultured bovine mammary epithelial cells, respectively. the methionine was added at levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 or 100 μg/mL. The expression of casein αs1 gene was enhanced with increasing addition levels of methionine from 0 to 60 μg/mL and then decreased thereafter. The estimated optimal level of methionine was at 57 μg/mL. Expression of casein αs1 gene was significantly (P0.01) higher when 60 μg/mL of methionylmethionine was added to replace the same level of methionine. These results indicate that mammary epithelial cells can utilize methionylmethionine for milk protein synthesis with a higher efficiency than methionine.
