Combining Biotechnology with Conventional Breeding to Create New Vegetable Varieties

Breeding of main vegetables in China has released many good varieties. But it still need to be improved especially in quality and productivity comparing with the needs of vegetable production and varieties of advanced foreign countries. Future breeding target should be focused on disease resistance, yield, quality and ecological adaptation. Application of biotechnology mainly including plant tissue and cell culture, transformation, molecular marker assisted breeding were discussed. Combination of conventional breeding with modern biotechnology will greatly enhance variety improvement in the future.
