Li Cong-he (Nanjing Institute of Political Science,Shanghai 200433,China)
As a universal phenomenon in human languages, interjections originated from the natural psychological or physiological re- sponses of human beings which then evolved into simple imitations or exaggerations of the sounds and finally became grammatical- ized particles forming a continuum of natural behaviors and language proper. The primary interjections carry rich pragmatic and cognitive functions. They encode a kind of procedural information which may indicate the speaker's subjective experience or atti- tude towards a certain proposition or object. It may affect the cognitive environment of communicators and acts as the subjective e- motional guide governing the relevance of discourse.
