Training Skills and Developing Intelligence:Integrating Instrumentality and Humanity in Foreign Language Education

This article argues against the mere instrumental interpretation of the goal of foreign language education on the basis of the analysis of the objective of education,the nature of language and the components of intelligence.It is pointed out that under the influence of the instrumental view the main problem that has arisen in practice is the loss of subjectivity and that the initiative of students cannot be put into full play.In the context of globalization we must rethink about the nature of foreign language education and integrate instrumentality and humanity in theory and practice in curriculum design,teacher education and testing.
