The Construction of Social Identity in Multi-party Discourse

To investigate the impact of the speaker’s discourse role and communicative task on his construction of social identity in the multi-party discourse,this paper chooses three types of discourse: television interview,debate and courtroom trial. On the basis of the interpersonal model of systemic functional linguistics,it conducts a detailed discourse analysis and pinpoints the following: first,remarkable as the constructed opposition of WE and THEY is,the boundary between them is blurred as discourse unfolds; second,the tendency to align the THEY on the part of the speaker varies in accordance with his communicative task and discourse role.
