Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Personal Strengths Inventory

1187 middle school students were asked to complete the Personal Strengths Inventory(PSI) to test its reliability and validity in Chinese adolescents. The results showed that: Chinese revision of PSI had 21 items, and exploratory factor analysis extracted 5 factors(emotional awareness, emotional regulation, goal setting, social competence and empathy. The confirmatory factor analysis verified that the 2-order model of the scale fits well (χ~2/df=3.36, CFI=0.88, TLI=0.87, RMSEA=0.06). Criterion validity results showed that all factors had significant positive correlation with UWES-S(0.30~0.56), and negatively correlated with CES-D(-0.37~-0.05). The Cronbach's α of all factors ranged from 0.65 to 0.87, the testretest reliability coefficient of all factors ranged from 0.56 to 0.80. The Chinese version of the PSI has satisfactory reliability and validity, and could be used for the measurement of personal strengths in Chinese adolescent students.
