A Struggle for Public Space: Revisiting the Conflicts between the Muslim Communities and Local Mainstream Community in Europe

ZHENG Bixian
The nature of the tensions between the Muslim communities and the local mainstream community in Europe lies in the struggle for public space, which can be ascribed to three reasons.First, the miserable memory of history and a negative cognition of reality have resulted in a social idea lacking mutual trust.Second, the internal conflicts between the value of multiculturalism and those of equality and freedom have led to the inability of public policy to balance the two parties' interests.Third, citizenship should not be regarded only as a legal concept, which must at the same time include the ideas of culture and value. The local mainstream community does not attach enough attention to the double identity of the Muslims in Europe. To reallocate public space, reassess public policy and redefine the concept of citizenship, will help realize the reconciliation and cooperation between the two groups in Europe.
