DUAN Na(Pingdingshan Teachers College,Pingdingshan,Henan 467002,China)
zi, er, tou" are three typical affixes in modern Chinese. Comparing and analyzing the nouns of locality with the suffix "tou" in modern Chinese, the author in the essay holds that "tou" after "dong, xi, nan, bei"--meaning the east, the south, the west and north ought not to be affixes, but the etyma of directional indication. Together with "dong, xi, nan, bei","tou" forms complex compound words, not adjunctive compound words.
