Development of Chinese Drama since the 21~(st) Century

Song Bao-zhen
By studying Chinese drama performance since the 21st century, this paper analyses its basic features and artistic characteristics and points out the following three main phenomena.First, rehearsal and replay of the classic repertoire occupies a considerable proportion in all the performances.Second, original plays and performance begin to display their strength.Third, performances in small theatres will continue and show the trend of popularization and pluralism. In the modern context, dramas that probe into humanity and reflect the reality are still the mainstream to be developed, while the appearance of private-owned theatrical companies, professional or non-professional,enriches the market with their interest in popularization, commercialization and entertainment. How to protect and guide the market is still a question under discussion.
