Rice yield estimation based on remote sensing data and divisions

Using statistical yield and MODIS EVI from 2000 to 2007 at the county level in Hunan Province, provincial total rice yield estimation models were created based on rice area detection and divisions.The relative errors,RMSE(root mean square error),and the scatter plots between estimating and statistical yield were used to select the optimal models,and then forecasted the total rice yield in 2008.The results showed that:the errors of total rice yield estimation models based on divisions were less than those based on provincial level;the optimal models mainly included quadratic nonlinear and stepwise regression models,and concentrated from heading and milky growth periods.The relative errors of fitting results was less than those of forecasting results,and both of them were less than 5%.So divisions are useful for improving the accuracy of rice yield estimation by remote sensing.
