Design and Performance Evaluation of Muffler at Turbocharger Inlet

The sound pressure spectra of intake noise and interior noise at driver's right ear of a compact gasoline vehicle are measured in a road test with the source of noise at the frequency range of 2. 6 ~ 3. 0k Hz located at turbocharger. The muffler at compressor inlet is designed with its transmission loss without flow evaluated by finite element analysis and verified by experiments based on two-load method,with both results agree well with each other. In the frequency range of 1. 8 to 3. 3k Hz,the average transmission loss reaches over 25 d B. Finally the sound pressure spectra of intake noise and vehicle interior noise with and without muffler are compared and the results indicate that the muffler designed has ideal noise attenuation performance in objective frequency range and can effectively reduce abnormal vehicle interior noise caused by turbocharger.
