OVERWINTERING OF VIBRIO CHOLERAE-VIABLE BUT NON-CULTURABLE STATE AND ITS DETERMINATION

Xu Huaishu R. R. Colwell(Ocean University of Qingdao)(University of Maryland, U. S. A. )
Vibrio cholerae is a member of the natural flora of bacteria in the cstuarine and marine environments. Vibrio cholerae changes to non-culturable state under unsuitable conditions, for example, low water temperature, low salinity and low concentration of nutrients. Non-culturable, viable cells of Vibrio cholerae are determined by direct viable count and immunofluorcscent antibody staining. Experiments indicated that Vibrio Cholerae overwintered through the viable but non-culturable state.
