Antibacterial Activity in the Haemolymph of the Shrimp, Penaeus chinensis

The antibacterial activities in the haemolymph of the shrimp, Penaeus chinensis against three Vibrio species and Aeromonas hydrophila were measured. The haemolymph of the shrimp was divided into plasma and haemocyte by centrifugation, and the antibacterial activities of the two parts were recorded as a survival index of bacterium respectively. The survival indexes of the three Vibrio species were lowest an hour after incubating with plasma sample, while the survival index of Aeromonas hydrophila slowly decreased during the incubation period of four hours. It was found that the plasma sample contains higher antibacterial activity against Vibrio harveryi than against the three other bacteria. The antibacterial activity against the four bacteria was undetected or quite low in the haemocyte lysate supernatant (HLS) sample. It strongly indicates that the antibacterial activity in the plasma sample is higher than that in the HLS sample.
